Q: I have a waterbed, bunk bed, loft bed, RV bunk, etc. will Urban Shelf work?
A: Yes, for most models - though sometimes on bunk beds, a safety rail may interfere - or mandate that you put it in a certain location.
Q: What if my Urban Shelf slides out too easily from my mattress / box spring?
A: Apply the two strips of 4" x 1" grip tape on the outer bottom edges closest to the hinge. They will help Urban Shelf to keep it's grip for lighter matresses and box springs that are slippery. We are including the grip tape strips as a standard for new Urban Shelf shipments and any new shipments to Amazon.com
Q: Why does my Urban Shelf slant downward slightly and not look as rigid as the shelves in the pictures online?
A: Slide your mattress in a bit so you can just see the box spring edge. Now the lower portion of Urban Shelf is better supported and will flex less when loaded.
Q: Why does my Urban Shelf bounce when I toss around on the bed too much?
A: Slide your Urban Shelf down as close as possible to the headboard - this will keep bouncing to a minimum. Also, make sure to push Urban Shelf all the way in at the base so that it gets the most "grip" against your mattress.
Q: Do I have to remove Urban Shelf to change the sheets the bed?
A: Optional, once you get the hang of it, removal is not required. Though if you are changing/washing the mattress pad, Urban Shelf removal makes things easier.
Q: When I make the bed, I like to pull the comforter all the way up to the headboard, won't Urban Shelf get in the way?
A: Yes, if you leave the top folded down. No, if your mattress is not more than 9" thick - as you can fold the top 180 degrees and quickly tuck it under the pillow.
Q: I have a memory foam/or Ultra Soft mattress, will Urban Shelf work for me?
A: Possibly, Urban Shelf needs a rigid surface above and below its lower slat - results may vary. We have tested successfully on some brands but not all.
Q: I have a slat/island bed with no box spring, will Urban shelf work?
A: Yes, Urban shelf is strongest when placed on a slat bed. The base is rigid, and the slat frame pushes the middle section even tighter against the mattress. An Urban Shelf can hold 5-10 lbs in this configuration.
Q: I have a couch with fluffy lightweight cushions, will Urban Shelf work for me?
A: Likely not, Urban Shelf depends on having rigid support above and below the bottom slat.
Q: Why are there two cord holders, and why are they different sizes?
A: First, we advise getting a 6' charging cord so you can use your phone while in bed more comfortably. Next, thread the cord through the smaller hole first, then drape to the second holder when not in use. Alternatively, you could charge two devices with two different sized cords. the cord holders can also be used to hang items if desired.
Q: Will Urban Shelf break if I overload it?
A: In our test lab we tried to break several shelves. We have NEVER seen one break from overloading. They are made from engineering grade ABS plastic. Typically the shelf will bend at the lower hinge(non-catastrophically) slightly and slide out from your mattress if you put say >6-7 lbs. If you do break one, please email us, as we would like to see pictures.
Q: Will Urban Shelf hold an iPad next to my bed?
A: iPad is larger than the top of Urban Shelf - many people have had success but we would stick to holding your cell phone and other smaller items. iPad mini and most smaller tablets and e-readers will fit just fine. When in iPad stand mode, Urban Shelf performs very well for viewing movies, video chat, presentations, and the like…
Q: I already have a nightstand, do I need Urban Shelf too?
A: Many people like to have both, Urban Shelf is great for dedicated items like your phone and remotes. It can bridge the gap to your night stand so you can achieve maximized ergonomic perfection while lying in bed.
Q: Can I wall mount Urban Shelf?
A: Yes, you will need to drill two small holes - go to our instructions page for details.
